Abstract

Loom is an innovative smart device designed to support women during pregnancy, making the transition to motherhood easier by providing essential knowledge and personalized support. It offers a journal-like experience that tracks the pregnancy journey day by day. Future mothers can engage in daily chats with Loom, sharing their emotions and experiences. This interaction helps them better understand their feelings and provides tailored information to address their questions and concerns throughout the pregnancy. Each conversation with Loom is summarized and saved in the Loom app as a memory, gradually creating a comprehensive pregnancy map. Mothers can customize each memory by adding photos and notes, building an archive of their pregnancy experience. Every memory is linked to tailored articles created by the service to help mothers better understand what they are going through. The app can be shared with a partner or trusted person, enabling them to learn alongside the mother and become more involved in the pregnancy journey.

Brief

Starting from the questions “How can we support people in making sense of the data and information about their body through intelligent voice agents?” and “Can voice assistants help develop literacy of intimate well-being and health at home?”, the two challenges have been applied to the field of women’s health in order to give a tailored answer to those questions.

Research

Topic selection

Through a first step of desk research the topic of women’s health has been divided into subtopics to explore: sexuality, motherhood, reproduction and health issues, all presented relevant issues to address.

To identity the correct topic, the main question to answer is “When is a voice assistant needed?”. The answer to that question is “When your hands are busy”, which led to identifying the moments key moments to work on. Starting from the mammography as an interaction where guidance and voice assistance could be a useful tool, the research then moved to the issue of breast feeding and the main topic of pregnancy and motherhood, making the new goal of the project: Helping women through pregnancy and in the first moments of becoming a mother.
